Henri Gregoire a remarkable and contradictory character who despite being Bishop of Blois supported the Revolution. He wished to abolish slavery, and eliminate the local dialects by imposing French speaking throughout the country. He wrote a pamphlet deploring the destruction of historical monuments in which the term vandalism was used for the first time.
